 2016 Preview

The Mae Jemison Jaguars will field a football team for the first time this fall. They will be led by head football coach Kelvis White as they prepare for their initial season on the gridiron.

Kelvis White moves over from Dothan to become the head football coach at Mae Jemison in Huntsville. His 8 year record at Dothan was 39-45 and 0-4 in the post season.

The new school replaces J.O. Johnson in the Huntsville area. White has served as an assistant coach at Russellville and Homewood prior to accepting the head coaching position at Dothan in 2008. He is a graduate of Courtland High School and the University of Alabama. He is the brother of Laron White, the head football coach at Tanner.

Coach White's overall record as a head football coach in eight season stands at 39-45 (46.4%). Over the course of his career, Coach White's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times .

The Mae Jemison Jaguars will play in Class 5A region eight during the 2016 season. The Jaguars will have a difficult time competing in Class 5A with a young team in their initial season. The Jaguars have one of the toughest schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 71-42 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 5A and 20th in the AHSAA.

This season, the Jaguars will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region eight.

Mae Jemison joins the AHSAA as a new high school after the closing of Butler and J.O. Johnson recently.

The Jaguars open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Calera on Friday, August 19 at Louis Crews Stadium. Last year the Calera Eagles finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 5A region four. The Eagles lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Eufaula by a score of 48-27.

Mae Jemison and Calera have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Jaguars have a 1-1-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in with
